Good Faith Estimate

Your right to an estimate

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency services, such as counseling sessions. You can ask Step By Step Support, or any provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service.

What the estimate includes

A Good Faith Estimate shows the costs of services that are reasonably expected for your care. For counseling, that typically means:

• The type of service (for example, an intake session or ongoing individual counseling)
• The expected fee per session
• The expected frequency and number of sessions, where it can be reasonably anticipated

Because counseling needs vary from person to person, the estimate is a good-faith projection based on the information known at the time — not a guarantee of the exact final amount. If your needs change, you can request an updated estimate.

When you receive it

Make sure your provider gives you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least 1 business day before your service. You can also ask for one at any time before you schedule. If you schedule a service at least 3 business days in advance, you will receive the estimate within 1 business day of scheduling.

If your bill is higher

If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you have the right to dispute the bill through the federal patient-provider dispute resolution process.

Starting the dispute process will not affect the quality of care you receive from us. We would always rather talk it through with you first, so please reach out to us if you have any questions about a bill.

Keep your estimate

Make sure to save a copy or take a picture of your Good Faith Estimate. You may need it if a question about your bill comes up later. Keep it somewhere you can find it easily.
